The worst assumptions concerning speed of destruction of the Western Ghermonassa necropolis are justifying. Because of only 2 days of torrential rains the consequences have appeared irreversible. Territory of the Western Ghermonassa necropolis decreases not even day by day, but hour by hour.
On June, 25 2010 employees of Archeology Fund and East Bospor archaeological expedition fixed a collapse of coastal line of about 120 sq.m. The fallen piece is approximately 50 m long. During inspection we revealed a considerable quantity of partially or completely destroyed burials, tens of human bones are fixed and collected. It is necessary to notice that not only the territory of abandoned at first sight coastal line, but also real aetate located on Lebedev Street in Taman are falling into the sea. This time a fence site caved in, and soon inhabited and economic structures would.
In this respect employees of the Fund and expedition management come to a conclusion that the summer field season needs to be moved from excavations at settlement Za Rodinu to the area of Ghermonassa necropolis. Besides the necropolis it is planned to begin excavations of one of the barrows near to the Bald |(Lysaya) mountain. The group of barrows situated in this place is known for the fact that in one of them a unique find was found out: a marble Taman sarcophagus and gold ornaments. At present the Taman sarcophagus is exhibited at the Historical museum in Moscow, and ornaments from it are in the State Hermitage.
The Taman sarcophagus is one of the most well-known monuments of Ancient Art of IV century BC. It comes from the territory of Bospor kingdom, the Ancient Greek state laid on Tamanskiy and Kerch peninsulas. Found in the beginning of XX century the sarcophagus drew at once the attention of experts as an outstanding work of Ancient Greek art. Most likely, it was brought from Greece by request of a notable Bospor grandees. To manufacture it they used marble extracted in mountains of Asia Minor; under a cutter of a skillful master the five-ton marble block acquired perfect proportions.
